The black wire is the wire that the computer uses to send power to allow overdrive, then converter lockup. This particular connector is attached to the valve body, and sticks up through the case.

So, to locate it, find the tranny pan, towards the rear, on the driver side, on the upper side of the case, the connector will be sticking up with a 3-wire on it. The tranny part of the connector is a white plastic connector Is there anyway to disable just the lockup solenoid?
This tranny is shifting in and out of lockup while on the highway with or without OD engaged. I was hoping that I could just disconnect a wire to disable it. Laying under the truck with my head towards the front and my feet towards the back and looking up at the tranny, which solenoid is it that controls the lock up?
You know the 3-pronged connector white, oval-shaped sticking up on the driver side of the tranny? Well that connector has a pair of wires to connect to the solenoid on the inside on passenger side. The wires run along the bottom of the valve body. If you pull the tranny pan, you can see this. Now, the solenoids are paired, with the black wire powering the overdrive solenoid, and the white wire powering the lockup solenoid. I'm not seeing anything saying operation will otherwise be affected, but if you're getting lockup in any gear other than 4th, you most likely have a faulty lockup solenoid, in that it is not venting not venting causes lockup.
So, cutting the power will not necessarily help it probably will stop lockup, but no promises--I say this because it should only get power when in OD, but if you're locking up in other gears, it must be getting power to close the vent somehow, probably an electrical shortsince it looks like it's already fried somehow.
You really should get it checked before clipping wires. I believe that I have an electrical short somewhere, but my first test will be to disconnect not cut, never cut the lock-up solenoid. If I don't want to pull the pan, which color external wire does this white wire connect to?

Flyin6 Administrator Posts: I have been assembling a compilation of general information about how to safely and smartly 'eliminate' the factory computer PCM from our classic Dodge Rams, particularly on the Cummins-powered Rams.
This information is specifically intended to help those doing a Cummins conversion, however I feel the information could be beneficial to anyone with an older Ram with a PCM, or who like me considers 'wiring' to be their nemesis. First, as you all know, these older-than-dirt computers are dying every day. The newest of them is now 20 years old.
With the three Ramchargers I've done conversions on, my goal was to eliminate the computer controls by replacing both the sensors and receivers for the factory gauges and switches with typical off-the-shelf components found at most local parts stores or online, while also trying to retain all of the factory gauges. When we did Oxx, we also went through all of the legal requirements to officially convert the title to reflect the vehicle now runs on diesel.
For the most part, every single bit of factory Ram electronic ignition and emissions equipment was no longer needed. I'll address the main components individually. The FSO is what 'allows' fuel to flow, or not. When you turn the key to run and start the FSO is sent 12v switched power from the main harness via the key switch, which allows the injection pump to send fuel to the injectors.
When you turn the key off, 12v power is removed and the fuel is cut off, shutting down the engine. This is the normal operating procedure for a Cummins.
Naturally, having 12v switched power going to the Cummins engine harness and particularly to the FSO is essential. This doesn't require any special switches, but it can be overlooked during a conversion. Also, the factory used a spade terminal to attach to the FSO — we highly recommend replacing the spade terminal with a proper sized fish eye terminal and using the proper nut to retain the 12v wire securely to the FSO.
Otherwise the spade terminal can wiggle off and cause a sudden and immediate engine shut down. Grid Heaters toaster. The toaster is another matter. From the factory, it is controlled via the computer, and received signals from a couple sensors in the intake manifold.
The computer is what tells the grid heater to cycle off and on during warm-up only when it is cold enough outsideand after things warm up the computer tells the heater to stop cycling. You will notice the volt meter drop significantly when this is occurring.
This is normal. But, the engine does not need the toaster to cycle itself off and on for 5 minutes during warm-up. Soon as the engine is started and running a few seconds, the toaster is no longer needed.
Many folks disconnect it all together. But, I like having it, so I simply took the 12v signal wire to the toaster and redirected it to my dash to a momentary switch, which only activated when I push it, and I control for how long and how often. On the coldest days we recommend using the heater for about 15 seconds, release, and turn the key. That is normal. After that, drive on — no more heater required.

There are two wire transmissions out there; these have a non-lock-up torque converter. With this three wire setup you have a four speed transmission plus a torque converter lock-up feature. The extra gear is 3rd high range. We've been asked this question for years, so I decided to put it down in black and white. What we're actually going to do here is control the overdrive and torque converter lock-up normally controlled by the computer using one vacuum and two oil pressure switch.
This will be accomplished with the use of three GM parts and some trick wiring. This can be made to work with a diesel motor also with or without a vacuum pump and vacuum regulator. The center wire on the transmission is the hot wire and the two other wires are ground wires for overdrive and the lock-up torque converter. The front wire is the overdrive ground and the rear wire is the torque converter lock-up ground.
You can get a three wire female connector from a junk yard or buy one from us. Run a 12 volt fused wire that turns on and off with the key to the vacuum switch, then to the center wire on the transmission connector.
This is a normally open vacuum switch that takes 7 inches or more of vacuum to shift into overdrive and lock-up the torque converter and 3 inches or less of vacuum to down shift and unlock the torque converter.
Lets say you're in overdrive going 54 miles per hour at very light throttle, when you press on the throttle and the vacuum drops below 3 inches the transmission will immediately shift back to 3rd gear low range without lock-up or even a lower gear depending on the throttle position. At the governor pressure tap on the transmission install a tee fitting for two oil pressure switches.
Or any other combination of switches you may want. At light throttle the transmission will shift into overdrive at 44 MPH and the torque converter will lock-up at 52 MPH. The pressure switches go on the outside of the transmission case in the governor pressure port.
It's located on the right side, at the upper rear of the main transmission case. The figures on the pressure switch will only be correct if you have a stock tire size and rear end ratio. Run a wire from the front pin on the transmission connector to the 44 PSI oil pressure switch and a second wire from the rear pin on the transmission connector to the 52 PSI oil pressure switch.
Now at 52 MPH when you step on the gas the transmission will shift back to third gear and the torque converter will unlock at the same time. It can't get any easier than this. Install a toggle switch in the overdrive ground wire. When the switch is turned off you will have 1st, 2nd and 3rd low range, exactly like a transmission with the same ratios. Once in overdrive the transmission will not come out of overdrive until the overdrive solenoid is turned off, or the vehicle speed goes below 44 miles per hour, or the vacuum drops below 3 inches.
