Renewed interest in borate as a bait toxicant has grown with the increased threat of Formosan subterranean termites, which destroyed this window sill in the Southern Regional Research Center Library.

Thanks to borate, a nontoxic salt that combats a host of house invaders, such damage is easy to prevent. Borate's advantage is that it acts across a spectrum of wood destroyers-from termites, anobiid beetles, lyctid beetles, and carpenter ants to brown or white wood rot.

Another plus is that it migrates and reaches moist areas where insects or fungi are active. The reason you may not have heard of borate is that until the s toxic chemicals were the standard means of treating termite outbreaks and wood rot problems. For prevention the most commonly used methods were pressure-treated green lumber and ground poisoning. Yet, well before then borate proved nontoxic and successful in preventing problems when it was field tested on important restoration projects such as the s Pontalba Building in New Orleans.

Research and the experience of pest-control operators have shown that borate can be just as effective with far less health risk. Wood treated with toxic chromated copper arsenate CCA requires a mask for cutting and cannot be burned, but you won't have to worry about wood protected with borate.

It's as harmless as table salt. Like salt, though, borate is water soluble, which means rain or contact with the ground can allow it to become mobile.

You or your pest-control operator have to take measures to keep the borate from leaching out of the wood. With the help of water repellent, paint, and special precautions for in-ground use, borate becomes a great protector, and our buildings are lucky to have such an environmentally friendly ally. Borate for wood protection comes in a number of formulations.

There are borate powders, granules, poultices, and gels-each is designed to deliver the borate to the site where it will do the most good. Borate powder-and-water formulations such as Tim-BorBoard Defenseor Spectracide Terminate are common for typical applications such as spraying.

Glycol-based solutions incorporate this thick, liquid alcohol to allow the borate to more effectively penetrate seasoned wood.

Borate gel is designed to be injected into small, predrilled holes in wood. Yet another form of borate is fused plugs that release the preservative when they dissolve in the presence of moisture. Borate, a nonspecific herbicide, inhibits fungi growth. It can be injected as a gel in porch and other post bottoms or used with epoxy consolidants. Photo: Courtesy of Jecta. Borate is a naturally occurring salt mined in geological saline deposits from Death Valley and Chile.

Borate has been used by consumers for decades in the form of laundry additives and boric acid-often spread as a bug killer. The salt is safe enough to use on food preparation surfaces so there is no risk to your family's health.

While borate is not poisonous to mammals, it's toxic to insects and can wipe out whole colonies-an especially important characteristic for termite control.

Subterranean drywood termites, the pests threatening houses in the Southern states, the Southwest, and California since the s, have been bad enough. How serious is this? But the most widespread groups of pest termites are the first and the second. The subterranean termites also dwell in the barns, garden houses and dunghills. They do much more harm to your property. Learn more about drywood termites in house. Termites feed on cellulose.

As we know, wood contains most of cellulose, and so do other derivatives of this material, such as paper, cardboard etc.

When speaking about wildlife, you can hardly call them pests as they only feed on dead wood. However, since the houses are built from processed wood, they become a wonderful treat for these insects. The rot which they leave at the crime scene proves that termites are more interested in cellulose rather than the actual wood. Michael Waldvogel, entomologist from NC State University found that termites can cause serious damage in years of their activity.

They can continue to feed on your wooden house year-round if they have a good protection from colder temperatures. Thankfully, you have some years to find out and destroy them. The contaminated members die from starvation as they are unable to extract nutrition from cellulose-containing products anymore. Premise has since built a solid reputation as a reliable long term termite control product with virtually no serious problems encountered in the market place. Bayer are so confident of the effectiveness of its Premise product, that they provide a written guarantee to termite controllers in the USA who fully treat the soil areas at the base of a structure as per the Premise label requirements.

It is a condition of this guarantee that annual inspections are carried out by the same company installing the Premise termiticide soil treatment. Full details are available from the authorized Premise termiticide users in your locality. The installation of a Premise treated soil zone requires expert knowledge and specialized equipment to form a complete and continuous barrier to protect the building from a termite entry and infestation - as illustrated below:.

Trench and treat soil around external concrete slab edge. Trench and treat soil around walls and piers in the sub-floor area. Drill concrete floor along expansion joints and cracks, and treat soil thereunder. Drill concrete floor around pipes and treat soil thereunder. Drill concrete patio areas and treat soil area therein - a high risk termite nest location. Premise works quite differently from other termiticide soil treatment products which are designed to repel or keep termites away from a treated soil area, rather than killing them.

With "repellant" termiticides, any minute gap in the treated soil can be detected and exploited by the termites to gain entry in the building. This is a major short-coming of the old-fashioned termite control alternatives, far too often, with financially disastrous consequences. Termites cannot detect the Premise chemical as it has no odor, taste or smell to the termites. If you have termites in your property, we recommend you discuss the problem with the neighbors. Obviously, several homes close by each other with a Premise treated soil barrier, will greatly increase the chances of successful termite control, for the benefit all concerned, excepting the termites.

Recent termite control analysis — the biggest in USA history. In brief, Premise treated soil zone acts on an on-going basis to prevent termite entry through a treated soil area into a building or other protected structures.

Such a chemical soil zone under and around the external perimeter of a building is a wide continuous target for the foraging termites to encounter, rather than scattered bait stations around the building!

Premise is less expensive than Termidor and rated as better value for money. Ring the Experts: The success of a Premise termite control soil treatment depends heavily upon the skill and experience of the termite control specialist engaged.
